Music Performances
With more than 60 events over the academic year, there are plenty of opportunities to experience some wonderful performances and to hear favourite or different repertoire. This spring sees a renewed focus on world class chamber musicians gracing the intimate performance space of PATS Studio One. We are pleased to welcome internationally acclaimed cellist Steven Isserlis to the studio with a varied programme celebrating the special anniversaries of Schumann, Barber, Chopin and Dohnanyi on Friday 12 February, the outstanding Doric String Quartet who will perform a programme of Haydn, Korngold and Beethoven on Sunday 7 March, and the young French sensation, pianist Emmanuel Despax, whom we are delighted to welcome to the University for a special afternoon recital on Sunday 28 March.

Normally given by undergraduate and postgraduate students specialising in performance, the repertoire at these concerts is extremely varied. It's a great opportunity to hear some familiar and not so well known works. Jonathan Leathwood PhD Guitar Recital

Describing himself as ‘the bastard child of acoustic finger style’, the Austrian born guitarist Thomas Leeb owes as much to percussive techniques as traditional finger style guitar, with tunes punctuated by slaps, pops and beats. The resulting blur of busy hands and fingers really has to be seen to be believed.

This concert commemorates a much-loved University of Surrey student who graduated two
decades ago, but who sadly died in summer 2002. David Lovatt was a keen and gifted composer, and this award in his memory complements the University’s other prizes in composition with a world première and CD recording of the winning work by Gemini, the University’s Artists in Residence.
