A Photographic record of the restoration 2008 - 2011.

The Victorian artist George Frederic Watts OM RA (1817-1904) followed Michelangelo’s dictum that there was ‘but one art’ which could be expressed in drawing, painting and sculpture.

The Sculpture Gallery at the Watts Gallery is living proof of this ethos. When the Watts Gallery closed for restoration from 2008 to 2011 it had to move the entire collection into storage. It was a delicate operation, particularly for Physical Energy and Tennyson weighing over three tons each and as fragile as they were heavy. The return of the sculptures was a dramatic and worrying moment. Visitors to Watts Gallery today are able to view almost all the sculpture held in the collection.

The restoration of the Watts Sculpture Gallery was recorded over a period of three years by London-based photographer Anne Purkiss. A selection of her photographs can be seen in this exhibition.
