Application Forms
Employers use these to find out about you, as a potential employee. Using the information you give, the employer will decide whether or not to select you for the next stage of selection - usually an interview.
Application forms are mainly used by larger employers and are often online. If an employer asks you to complete their application form you should do so. They may reject your application if you send a CV instead.
Follow any instructions carefully.
Forms often ask for examples of things that you have done. By asking for these examples the employer is giving you the chance to demonstrate that you have the skills and abilities, sometimes called competencies, that they are looking for. You can use examples from study, work or your other activities and interests. Make sure that you describe each situation in the way they ask and that you clearly bring out the part you played.
These competency based questions can take a lot of time to answer and you might also find it hard to come up with good examples. They are deliberately made difficult for two reasons:-
- The employer is testing to see if there is evidence that you have the qualities thay are seeking. If you are having trouble finding examples of the things they want, this may mean that you don't, yet, have enough depth of experience. Unis students are fortunate because the professional training, gained during a placement year, is usually a rich source of examples, but they can come from any recent aspect of your life. It's good to have some variation. If you really think you just haven't got the evidence they are after, then remember - you will probably be able to apply in the future, when you have gained a year or two of additional experience. You can always discuss your plans with a Careers Advisor, while you're studying here or afterwards.
- Employers also want candidates who are very keen to work for them and who have the determination to complete a challenging task. They think that if you really want to work for them - you'll find the time to fill out the form. You'll notice that the popular employers, often those who pay high salaries, tend to have difficult application forms.
