Professional Training Year
Professional Training is an integral part of life at the University of Surrey and is a fantastic opportunity for all Surrey students allowing them to experience life after university.
A pioneer in integrated Professional Training, the University’s Centre of Chemical and Process Engineering has operated its scheme in partnership with industry and the IChemE over several decades.
Professional Training is about providing you with “real world” experience so that you are prepared for life after graduation. The placement year is a period of paid employment and usually takes place in the penultimate year of undergraduate study. It may sound too good to be true - but our Chemical Engineering students regularly find themselves in various exciting locations on their optional year of Professional Training.

On beginning your placement you will be placed in a professional environment where, in addition to just work experience, your academic and personal potential is developed, helping you to become a fully rounded individual.
These qualities are widely recognised by employers and placement students are frequently offered permanent posts upon graduation.
