Awards
There are a variety of awards available at the University of Surrey.
Surrey Learning and Teaching Awards 2012
Nominations are invited for the 2012 Surrey Learning and Teaching Awards. Individual staff who teach, or who support learning and teaching, may apply, as may teams of two or three colleagues working together to enhance student learning. To be eligible applicants must demonstrate that they clearly contribute to the enhancement of the students’ learning experience
The criteria according to which all nominations will be judged align with those that are used by the Higher Education Academy to award National Teaching Fellowships. More detailed information about how to apply for the Surrey Learning and Teaching Awards, the criteria used to judge applications, and some guidance about writing an application, can be found in the Guidance document below. In addition hard copies may be obtained from Sue Ponsford, CEAD.

Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award 2011-12
Dr Maxine David, Lecturer in European Politics, has been awarded this year’s Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award. The award seeks to recognise and reward staff who demonstrate sustained excellence in teaching and who are engaged in innovative approaches to curriculum development, both designed to enhance the student experience at the University of Surrey. The Award is an integral part of the Surrey Learning and Teaching Strategy. Professor Gill Nicholls, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and chair of the selection panel noted the strength of the field and the exceptional work of those who were invited to discuss their approaches more fully with the panel.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Christopher Snowden confirmed his support for the panel’s decision and commented on Dr David’s strong case for teaching excellence evidenced by a variety of innovative approaches to enhancing student learning, specifically her focus on problem-based strategies to encourage students’ independent and deep learning, and on using collaboration and per review in face-to-face and on-line environments.
The final shortlist also included Dr Simon Usherwood from the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, Dr. Dawn Duke from the Library and Learning Services, and Dr. Spinder Dhaliwal from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.
National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS)
Universities have now been asked to identify Institutional Nominees for this years Individual National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS).
More information can be found at http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ourwork/supportingindividuals/ntfs . Staff who consider that they can demonstrate how they have met the three criteria are requested to contact CEAD (s.ponsford@surrey.ac.uk in the first instance, to register their interest).
The NTFS criteria are the same as those upon which previous Surrey Learning and Teaching Award winners have been judged. Previous winners of these awards are welcome to get in touch as are staff considering applying for the Surrey Learning and Teaching Awards this year.
A number of meetings will be held during February to discuss how staff may demonstrate that they have met the NTFS criteria. The dates of these will be publicised on the Surrey Learning and Teaching website, the CEAD website and on SurreyNet. The final university nominees will be chosen by March 7th on the basis of short interviews with candidates who indicate their interest in being the University nominee.. Teaching with New Technologies (TeNT) Award Scheme
The Teaching with New Technologies (TeNT) award scheme is designed to offer encouragement and support for teachers who wish to develop the use of emerging technology in their learning and teaching practice. A £500 award is available to undertake a project that applies new technologies in order to enhance an aspect of learning and teaching and to evaluate and share the results and impact.
The awards offer a supportive framework within which to:
- Explore – investigate applications of new or emerging technologies or innovative uses of established ones
- Extend – apply technology in new contexts or build on and develop previous work such as past TeNT projects
- Embed – integrate the use of technology into learning and teaching in more systematic or far reaching ways
