Green IT Twitters away at Surrey

Tuesday 10 March 2009

On 12 March, as part of the University’s Science Week, IBM Master Inventor Dr Andy Stanford-Clark will be discussing Computing for Environmentally-friendly applications – so-called Green IT.

Computers are at the heart of modern business, and account for significant contributions to energy bills at schools, at work and at home. Andy has wired up his own home to see how various devices impact on energy use, and in combining this with social networking technology has created the “House that Twitters”.

Andy’s house will tell him when the lights go on or off, whether the washing machine is running, and how much water has been used on a particular day.

The presentation will also provide an overview of the environmental impacts and demands on the natural resources of the planet involved with computers, and demonstrate further environmentally-friendly computing, or “Green IT”, applications.

The talk will take place Thursday 12 March, 7.00pm - 8.00pm, SoM LT
