  • Access courses
Are there any required subjects at AS or A2 level?

Grade A in A level English Literature, English Language, or English Literature and Language for all programmes. Please contact Isabella Cox if your A levels do not include any of these subjects.

Do you have any advice for mature applicants?

We strongly encourage applications from mature candidates (those aged 21 years or over on entry). We are willing to give consideration to mature applicants who do not possess the formal qualifications listed above but can demonstrate their ability to cope with the demands of the programme. We do consider individual cases carefully. Please contact Isabella Cox if you would like to discuss your circumstances further.

Do you accept students with Overseas Qualifications?

Yes! We have an international student body and regularly accept students from overseas. For students whose first language is not English, evidence of proficiency in English is required (see www.surrey.ac.uk/international).

How much will it cost?

See more information in the University's fees and funding webpages.

Admissions Procedure

I am not at a UK school. Do I still have to apply through UCAS?

All applicants for full-time undergraduate programmes, whether UK or overseas, should apply through the UCAS system. For further information see How Do I Apply, or visit the UCAS website.

Please could you send me a UCAS Application Form and instructions on how to complete it?

It is no longer possible to make your UCAS application on a paper form. You should apply online using the UCAS Apply service.

What happens if I miss my grades?

You will automatically go into the UCAS clearing system which will allow you to search for vacancies at other UK universities. Because we also take into consideration areas of your application other than exam grades alone, we do sometimes consider taking some students who narrowly miss their grades. Make sure that you have written an accurate and positive personal statement, and remember to tell us about your extra-curricular achievements as well.

I've missed the deadline for applications. Do you accept late applicants?

We sometimes take a few late applicants, but you should contact Isabella Cox for advice before making your application.

I finish my exams this year, but I'd like to take a year out. Can I apply for deferred entry?

Yes. We would make you an offer in the usual way and hold your place for a year. You would be advised to include details of your gap-year plans on your UCAS form. But please note that we cannot normally defer an entry for more than 12 months.

I'm studying another degree course and want to change to an English course at Surrey. Can I go straight into the second year to save time and money?

If you have 120 credits or equivalent from the first year at your previous institution, you can transfer into the second year of the course at Surrey, as long as your previous course has given you appropriate knowledge and skills to enter our second year and subject to satisfactory references from your previous institution. You should ensure that we have a copy of your academic record when submitting your application. Transfers, like other applications, are handled by UCAS.

I'd like to look round and talk to staff and students before I apply. Can I arrange to do this?

Yes! We host several UCAS Open Days on which you can visit us and meet students and staff. We'd be very pleased to meet you! You should contact Isabella Cox if you are interested in attending. There are also details of University Open Days available.

The Course

Could you send me a full description of the modules in the course?

Information about topics of study and details of modules are available on the undergraduate study webpages. Please note that all modules are subject to change and availability.

How much tuition do I get?

For a typical module, you will have a one hour lecture and a one hour seminar each week. You will usually take four modules each semester.

What do English students do after they graduate?

This programme will prepare students for work in a number of professional fields, most obviously journalism and publishing. It would also give a useful background in fields such as personnel, marketing and advertising, media Industries, education, creative writing and arts administration.

Does the University provide English Language teaching?

Yes. View further details on the Languages and Translation Studies website.

Why should I choose Surrey?

We are a very friendly department, with a strong collegiate atmosphere and a thriving publication profile. The range and quality of the programmes we offer is excellent. Guildford is an exciting town in which to be a student, and London is only 35 minutes away by train.

Will I have to take a lot of exams or will it be mainly coursework?

Our modules are assessed using a variety of tasks created to develop your knowledge and skills. Presentations, individual and in groups, participation, essays and projects, library work and editing work are all different ways you may be assessed. Yes, we do also have examinations! Around half of the assessments are formally set in this way. These teach you to develop a body of knowledge that you have at your fingertips and can produce at the crucial time - a skill all professional people need.

We prepare you for these so that you can demonstrate your knowledge as well as you can. In your final year you have to write a BA Dissertation with the supervision of one of the lecturers. You can choose a topic that particularly interests you.
