What we do
Every University has a commitment to widen participation and engage with the wider community.
Here in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences we work to…
- Raise the aspirations of young people to study the Arts and Human Sciences at University
- Increase the attainment of young people studying these subjects through revision lectures and workshops
- Support schools and colleges that typically have more young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds
- Inspire and inform young people about careers in our subject areas through our careers guides and open days
- Listen to what teachers and students want. We develop our activities in consultation with teachers where possible and always consider how they can link to the curriculum but also extend the students’ learning
- Involve our students in school and college activities so that young people get to meet current students but also to give our students opportunities to develop
Our track record…
- Last year we organised activities to reach nearly 1000 young people
- Most of our work was with schools and colleges with a higher proportion of young people from the lower socio-economic groups
- Two-thirds of our work was with Years 11 to 13 however around one-third was with younger students than this including primary schools pupils
- The majority of our activities were on campus as we consider that young people gain alot from experiencing what a University campus is like
Our typical activities…

- Sixth Form Lectures covering a variety of subjects
- Politics Revision Lectures and Taster Days
