• The Department of Chemistry has a strong research focus with international leaders in their fields: natural products chemistry, materials chemistry, fuel cell research, nanotechnology and computational chemistry are important areas of research. The central role of Chemistry in the scientific and engineering disciplines is reflected in strong links and joint programmes with other Departments at the University.
  • The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering undertakes research in a variety of cross disciplinary groupings as well as within two internal research centres, PRISE and CORA. Alongside our research, the Department is proud to teach a number of undergraduate programmes accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. The Department also teaches a variety of process systems based MSc programmes.
  • The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is a multi-disciplinary Department which undertakes prize winning research across a wide spectrum of activities. We maintain strong links with Industry and all of our Undergraduate and Postgraduate taught degrees are fully accredited. Priding ourselves on our tradition of excellence in teaching, research and practice as a result of bringing together internationally leading staff, exceptional students and modern facilities.
  • The Department of Computing has an international reputation for research and teaching. We are recognised for our high quality teaching, support, organisation, resources and development in the National Student Survey, with an overall 95% student satisfaction. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 60 per cent of our research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
  • The Department of Electronic Engineering is one of the largest departments in the University with extremely strong metrics in both elements of our core business, teaching and research. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 93 per cent of our research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, which placed the Department second in the UK within the Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials unit of assessment. Similarly our teaching is also rated very highly. In the past 4 years, we have consistently achieved an “overall satisfaction” rating in the National Student Survey (NSS) in excess of 90%, again rating us among the best Departments within the UK.
  • The Department of Mathematics has widely recognised research groups in nonlinear mathematics and statistics and runs a lively PhD programme. It offers a range of undergraduate BSc and MMath courses in Mathematics in an environment where teaching and research are well integrated.
  • The Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences is home to 25 academic staff and around 450 students at all levels from undergraduate through to PhD. Alongside our teaching activities, the division has a considerable range of research interests in fluid dynamics, materials & structures, biomedical engineering, robotics, structural integrity and vehicle engineering.
  • The Department of Physics is a friendly medium-sized department with approximately 200 students studying for MPhys and BSc degrees, as well 60 taking our focused, vocational MScs, and 75 PhD students. These are taught by 24 academics. It is almost unique amongst UK physics departments in offering all MPhys and BSc students a year in either industry or an internationally leading research lab. The Department has a strong reputation in research; in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 84% of its research was rated as world leading or internationally excellent.
