Postgraduate Chemistry Courses

The MRes in Chemistry comprises a 25 per cent taught programme (three modules, each of about 30-45 contact hours and 105-120 self-study hours) and a 75 per cent advanced project.

The MSc in Drug Discovery offers training in modern analytical techniques as applied to drug design and discovery. It includes training in modern organic synthesis, natural product chemistry and spectroscopic methods. Combined with this is an extensive training in modern computing technology as applied to drug design and discovery, including molecular modelling, pharmacophore searching, protein modelling and ligand docking, and applications of robotics and automation in the pharmaceutical industry.

Module Overview: MRes Chemistry

Some modules are compulsory and others are optional.  They include:

  • Management, Communication and IT Skills
  • Advanced Topics in Polymer Chemistry
  • Advanced Characterisation Methods
  • Advanced Organic Chemistry
  • Medicinal and Natural Product Chemistry
  • Advanced Topics in Inorganic Chemistry

Project Topic Options:

These include materials chemistry (inorganic solids, polymers and composites), physical organic chemistry, analytical chemistry (particularly for environmental monitoring and remediation), applied electrochemistry (clean energy technologies and biosensors), and bionanotechnology at the chemistry-biology-medicinal interfaces.
