INTERNATIONAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
The University has a number of funds to support implementation of its international strategy.
This will provide funding of US$20,000 (for bilateral projects) or US$30,000 (for trilateral projects) for high quality research collaborations between researchers at the University of São Paulo, North Carolina State University and the University of Surrey.
This will support researchers from the State of São Paulo and the University of Surrey in the development of joint research bids. Successful bids will receive funding of up to £5000 per year per project for the Surrey researcher(s), with this amount being matched by FAPESP for the São Paulo researcher.
This will provide grants of £2000 for University staff to develop links with staff at universities that are members of the Santander Universities Network.
This will provide grants of £5000 for students from universities that are members of the Santander Universities Network to spend up to six months conducting research at the University of Surrey. The deadline for applications has now passed. For information about future funding opportunities, please contact Peter Shelley (firstname.lastname@example.org).
There are a range of sources of external funding for international collaboration. Some of the key sources are highlighted here.
The UK Research Councils run a number of schemes to support activities that foster international collaboration.
The European Commission, through the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme, helps research organisations to set up or strengthen long term cooperation, through a coordinated exchange programme for their staff.
The British Academy offers funding opportunities for UK scholars and partners overseas to engage in international collaborative research in the humanities and social sciences. The Academy also offers support for UK scholars seeking to undertake a period of research abroad and for early career scholars from other countries seeking to undertake research in the UK.
The British Council runs a number of schemes that support UK Higher Education Institution in the establishment of international partnerships. The UK India Education and Research Initiative, for example, has a focus on innovation and new areas of development.
The Leverhulme Trust has four international travel schemes – study abroad fellowships, study abroad studentships, research fellowships and international networks. The international network scheme, for example, enables a Principal Investigator based in the UK to lead a research project where its successful completion is dependant on the participation of relevant overseas institutions.
The Euraxess UK website, hosted by the British Council, enables researchers to search for international funding opportunities, including travel to conferences, short research visits and fellowships.
Information on international funding opportunities is contained in Research Professional, the electronic news and research alerts service provided by Research Fortnight.
