Mooting Plus

Students from the School of Law at the University of Surrey have updated the traditional mooting competition to better prepare themselves for the world of work. The mooting competition is a feature of most Law schools and students from Surrey have consistently done well in regional and national events. But Emile Mcharsky-Todoroff, the Student Law Society’s Legal Professions Officer, felt it just didn’t represent the real life courtroom experience.
“Most mooting events see teams of students taking on the roles of senior and junior counsel to argue a case in front of a judge,” He explained, “The new Surrey format sees one member of the team taking on the role of solicitor and one the role of barrister, much closer to how the English system works, and benefiting students aiming to be solicitors as well.”

 


Justice Minister speaks at Law Ball

Students from the University of Surrey’s School of Law were delighted to welcome Justice Minister and Surrey MP Crispin Blunt to their annual Law Ball this weekend.

Mr Blunt said, “I’m very pleased to be part of this celebration and I’ve been impressed by the hard work and dedication of the students who have organised the ball. The opportunity to talk to tomorrow’s law professionals, at the very start of their careers, was one I couldn’t miss.”

 


New Head and Deputy for School of Law

School of Law University of Surrey

Professor Indira Carr has been appointed as Head of the School of Law and Robert Jago will be taking up the new post of Deputy Head of School from 1 August. 

Professor Carr joined the School of Law at the University of Surrey in 2007 having previously taught at the Universities of Warwick, Exeter, Kent and Middlesex. She is also an Honorary Visiting Professor at University College, London and will continue as the Associate Dean Research for the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law
