Methods Test for new Level 2 Students
Welcome to Level 2. This is the start of what will be an interesting and challenging year for you. The Level 1 techniques provide an essential foundation for the rest of your degree course, and therefore you will need to be extremely proficient and accurate in using them. We recognize that you may have become a little rusty over the summer, so the test below is designed to ensure that you start Level 2 with a good mastery of the techniques.
The test consists of 12 questions covering a wide range of methods from the Calculus and Linear Algebra modules: integration, stationary points, solution of differential equations, matrix methods, Maclaurin series, limits, complex numbers, vector algebra and definitions relevant to vector spaces. You will have 90 minutes to complete the test; within this time limit you can go back and change any of your answers. The test is deliberately quite challenging, with a pass mark of 70%. Like a driving test, it is a test of proficiency and you should congratulate yourself if you pass first time! To have the best chance of doing this, carefully revise your Level 1 notes in the above techniques and try some of the exercises that you were set. When you are actually doing the test, check your working carefully as you go and make sure that you type in each answer correctly. If you have time left at the end of the test, go back and check your answers again.
You may take the test as many times as you like up to the end of Week 2. If you do not pass first time, you will need to retake the test. The questions will be different each time you take the test, and everyone who takes the test will have a different set of questions. (Yes, we have a LOT of questions!) The test will be available between Friday 16 September and Sunday 16 October inclusive. In order to give yourself time for repeats, we recommend that you take your first test before the start of Week 1.
If you have carefully worked through the notes and exercises and found some things that you do not fully understand, you may wish to ask your tutor for advice. Do not leave this until the last minute! We expect that most students will pass the test by the deadline. If you are unable to do so, you will need to take remedial methods classes. These will be designed to enable you to reach the required standard as quickly as possible.
How to take the test
Read these instructions through completely before navigating to the test.
The test is administered on Maple TA, through this link, using your usual password and username.
Once you have logged into Maple TA, click "Find Classes Open for Registration" and choose the "Level 2 Returners" class (you only need to do this the first time you take the test). Once you have registered, there will be a menu entry for this class under "Classes I am taking". Click on this and you will see a summary of the test. Simply click on "Returners' Test" to begin.
You can attempt the questions in any order, using the navigation buttons at the top of the page.
When you have completed the test click the "Grade" button at the top of the page to mark your test. You can then view a question-by-question breakdown by clicking "View Details".
