Methods Test for new Level 3 Students
Welcome to Level 3. At the beginning of Level 2 you were asked to do the Level 2 Returners’ Test; at this level
there is the Level 3 Returners’ Test, which although not compulsory, we encourage you strongly to take part in. We will keep track of who takes part and who has not. You may have become a little rusty over the summer, and especially if you had a placement last year, you should get your maths skills up to scratch. The test below is designed to ensure that you start Level 3 with a good mastery of basic mathematical techniques.
The test consists of 12 questions covering a wide range of methods from the Calculus, Linear Algebra, ODE and Probability modules: integration, stationary points, solution of differential equations, matrix methods, Taylor series, factorizing polynomials, complex numbers, vector algebra and definitions relevant to vector spaces. There is no time limit on the test, since (unlike at Level 2) we do not organise remedial classes for this level. However, we set a pass mark of 70%. If you score below, we think you should definitely improve your skills/memory. Do look at your notes of past modules, be inventive if a question is not entirely like questions you’ve seen in the past, and try the test once more. There is no limit on the number of times you can try. When you are actually doing the test, check your working carefully as you go and make sure that you type in each answer correctly.
Read these instructions through completely before navigating to the test.
The test is administered on Maple TA, through this link, using your usual password and username. Once you have logged into Maple TA, click "Find Classes Open for Registration" and choose the "Level 3 Returners" class (you only need to do this the first time you take the test – it is likely that you’re still registered from previous tests). Once you have registered, there will be a menu entry for this class under "Classes I am taking". Click on this and you will see a summary of the test. Simply click on "Returners' Test" to begin.
You can attempt the questions in any order, using the navigation buttons at the top of the page. When you have completed the test click the "Grade" button at the top of the page to mark your test. You can then view a question-by-question breakdown by clicking "View Details". The test will be available from Friday 16 September until Sunday 16 October.
