Research
The Mathematics Department at the University of Surrey has one of the largest groups in the United Kingdom working on nonlinear mathematics and its applications.
The research interests of the Department cut a broad swathe through both pure and applied aspects of this area, ranging from ergodic theory, symplectic geometry and mathematical physics including gauge and string theories to novel applications in electronics, meteorology, neurobiology, arterial flow, molecular motors and spacecraft dynamics. A particular emphasis is placed on research at the interface between pure and applied mathematics. Research in the Department is organised into a number of Research Groups, but there are many overlaps and links between these:
There is also an active PhD programme associated with the research groups.
The Department of Mathematics is part of the following research networks and collaborations:
NCEO - National Centre for Earth Observation
MILES - Models and Mathematics in Life and Social Sciences
AstroNet-II: The Astrodynamics Network
ERIE - Evolution and Resilience of Industrial Ecosystems
- London Dynamical Systems Group
- Patterns, Nonlinear Dynamics and Applications (PANDA)
- One-Day Ergodic Theory Meetings
