The Universities of Strathclyde and Surrey have been identified as preferred partners to enter into a new strategic partnership with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the world-renowned National Physical Laboratory (NPL), a global centre of excellence in measurement and materials science. This new partnership will help to provide future leadership of NPL.

A new study published today in the journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), has found that time of day and sleep deprivation have a significant effect on our metabolism. The finding could be crucial when looking at the best time of day to test for diseases such as cancer and heart disease, and for administering medicines effectively.

Figures announced today from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) reveal what students from across the UK are doing six months after graduation. The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey found that 96.9% of Surrey graduates in 2013 were in work or further study, with more than 80% classed as graduate-level jobs. This puts the University top of the universities in England (excluding private providers) in the national table.

The University of Surrey, one of the UK’s leading universities, and Desire2Learn (D2L), the EdTech company that created the world’s first truly integrated learning platform, today announced the latest scores for student satisfaction with Surrey’s virtual learning experience from the i-graduate Student Barometer surveys. These surveys are produced by the independent survey organization, International Graduate Insight Group Limited. The data show a consistently rising level of satisfaction with the online learning offering at Surrey, lifting the university to one of the highest ranked in the UK.

The University of Surrey announced today that it has been awarded a Grand Challenges Explorations grant, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. With the grant, Professor Johnjoe McFadden will aim to revolutionise the control of tuberculosis by modifying the vaccine and designing a new test for the human form of the disease.

Narcissists tend to lack empathy, which can cause problems for themselves, the people around them and society in general. However, new research published today from the University of Surrey, suggests that with the right focus, people with narcissistic tendencies can feel empathy for another person’s suffering. This may be important in helping to prevent the often violent or anti-social behaviours that some narcissists are prone to and the crimes that are committed as a result.
