<title>Musical Scoring in the Earliest Sound Films from Weimar-Republic Germany, 1929-33</title>
<link>http://www2.surrey.ac.uk/msr/news/stories/2012/78663_musical_scoring_in_the_earliest_sound_films_from_weimarrepublic_germany_192933.htm</link>
<description>Congratulations to Dr Jeremy Barham on his successful bid for a British Academy grant. &#160;The grant will enable Jeremy &#160;to spend a period of three months researching at major film archives in Berlin, Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. &#160;He will be investigating the large body of rarely seen early sound films made during the politically febrile final years of Germany&apos;s Weimar Republic, immediately prior to the establishment of the Third Reich. &#160;Hundreds of neglected films in a variety of genres were produced at this time: adventure films, dramas, historical films, comedies, films noirs, romances, literary adaptations, sport films, musicals, documentaries and experimental films. &#160;Jeremy will be focussing on the musical scoring of this diverse repertoire - particularly its balance between specially composed and pre-existent music, and its relationships with early Hollywood - and exploring the socio-cultural insights that these films and their scoring practices provide into such a crucial phase of German history.</description>
