Nuclear matter is generally considered as a spin and isospin saturated system.
However, the bulk properties of isospin imbalanced system are of interest in systems close to the dripline. Moreover, spin polarized matter might be present inside neutron star matter. We will review the predictions for these systems from phenomenological mean-field approaches and compare them to more microscopic ones, like Brueckner-Hartree-Fock. This excercise can highlight the advantages and the deficiencies of present effective interactions.
