Biography

Jeff Tostevin is a theoretical nuclear physicist and a member of the Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Physics at Surrey. He has active research collaborations both at Surrey and with theoretical and experimental physicists in the UK, the USA, Japan, and Europe. He joined the staff of the University of Surrey as a 'New Blood' lecturer in 1985. His particular interests are the use of nuclear reactions to probe the structure of nuclei, and to understand the reaction mechanisms and dynamics involved when nucleons and composite nuclei collide with a nuclear target.

Research Interests

Jeff Tostevin is especially interested in the quantum mechanical and associated computational modelling of collisions of nucleons, loosely bound composite, exotic and unstable (neutron or proton rich) nuclear systems, their scattering and breakup, and also the dependence of these phenomena upon the spins of the nuclei and their constituents. He, with other Centre members, is pursuing research directed toward the greater understanding of nuclear properties away from the line of stable nuclei, an opportunity provided by the recent production and use of high-intensity radioactive beams of exotic nuclei with unusual combinations of neutrons and protons.
