Gender, Equality and Politics - European Futures

The European Year of Equal Opportunities for All (2007) will soon bring its activities to a close. Inevitably, consideration will be given to the overall impact of this campaign and other European activities on promoting equality in the Union. Scholars and policy makers are slowly starting to recognise the transitory nature of gender relations, as a result increasing focus is being given to the construction of gender norms and hierarchies.

Over the last three decades the body of feminist scholarship theorising and evaluating the impact of gender norms on the position of women in Europe has grown exponentially. This conference will explore current trends in scholarly debates and policy action in Europe and the international system more widely. The papers presented here will provide a framework for the analysis of current and future trends in the field of gender equality. Taking stock of current achievements in the field, the conference brings together scholars interested in uncovering the complexities that underpin gender hierarchies in Europe.
