Guildford – Your University Town
Guildford provides a fantastic environment to live and study. Set in the heart of Surrey’s beautiful countryside, the centre of this bustling historic town is just ten minutes’ walk from the University.
Offering all the amenities of a modern city, the cobbled High Street is criss-crossed by lanes providing a classic setting for a superb selection of high-street stores, designer boutiques and a large indoor shopping centre.
Guildford also has a huge assortment of restaurants, coffee shops and cafés, pubs and bars, lively clubs and excellent sports facilities.
Guildford’s qualities are widely recognised and it is regularly placed as one of the top ten locations to live in the UK.
Safe and secure
The campus, the town and the surrounding area provide a safe place to live. Surrey itself has one of the lowest levels of recorded crime in England, and Guildford’s crime rate reflects this.
Having been awarded the Safer Shopping Award, Guildford is one of the safest towns in the country to live, as well as one of the most attractive.
The town is served by a frequent bus service which runs late into the night, and the local area is cycle-friendly for those who prefer pedal-power.
Attractions of the Area
The town is surrounded by a wealth of nature and history, and provides a great starting point for exploring the South East of England.
Quick trips and places to visit include:
- The Surrey Hills – an area of outstanding natural beauty
- World-class sporting venues – Wimbledon (tennis), Twickenham (rugby union), Epsom and Ascot (horse racing), Sunningdale and Wentworth (golf), The Oval (cricket)
- Historic places – Hampton Court, Windsor Castle
- Theme parks – Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures, Legoland
Close to London
A frequent rail service to London Waterloo puts the capital only 40 minutes away by train. This means you are close enough to make the most of one of the world’s great capital cities – from a thriving cultural scene to shopping, sightseeing and, very soon, the excitement of the 2012 Olympic Games – whilst still being able to enjoy the benefits of a thriving English market town on a daily basis.
Excellent transport links
Guildford is also close to the M25 and perfectly placed mid-way between the major airports at Heathrow and Gatwick.
Many of our students enjoy the ease this allows for trips further afield when time allows, or conferences arise. For overseas students it makes arriving from, and returning to, your home country more straightforward than almost anywhere else outside London.
