A Supportive Environment

First-class Learning Resources

To support your academic study, you will have access to first-class learning resources and facilities.

The University Library

The Library is a six-storey building which is wireless enabled throughout. Whatever your style of work we have a space for you, with a range of group discussion and solo work areas. We have printing and photocopying facilities, as well as access to PCs, a café area, bookable rooms for small groups and other specialist facilities.

Extended opening hours mean that you can choose when you prefer to work. We are open until 1.30am during semester and for 24 hours a day during the run up to examinations. Self-issue and return equipment can be used to borrow and return books at any time.

Many Library services and resources are available online wherever and whenever you choose to work, with online books and journals available 24 hours a day. You can renew and reserve books online or via an automated phone service.

In addition to this, the University Library provides:

  • Seating for nearly 1000 users
  • A stock of over 600,000 books; 72,000 with full text available online
  • 1400 current print journal titles; 13,700 e-journal titles with full text available online
  • Moving image and sound collections, and playback facilities, with many resources delivered online
  • Additional learning support facilities and resources for students with disabilities or specific learning difficulties

SPLASH

Located within the Library, SPLASH (Student Personal Learning and Study Hub) is a flexible, student-centred learning space which you are encouraged to use to enhance your study. You will be able to get advice from student learning advisers on developing your skills, via both workshops and one-to-one appointments.

Through SPLASH you will have access to a wide variety of online and paper resources. Your academic librarian also works from SPLASH, providing face-to-face help and information skills workshops.

IT Services

We have a comprehensive central computing service, giving you free access to most networking facilities. Wireless networking is increasingly available across campus and all Courts of Residence feature a free broadband network service.

Disabled or dyslexic students

We provide a number of support services for our growing population of students with additional needs, including examination adjustments, dyslexia screening and referral, one-to-one learning support, and help with applying for the Disabled Students’ Allowance. Our services are coordinated by Additional Learning Support, and our staff are happy to discuss any requirements you may have.

International Student Office

The International Student Office offers a wide range of advice and guidance specifically for international students. Staff are available to help from the moment you consider studying at the University until after you graduate. This includes advice on employment during your programme, police registration and regulations relating to family members.

Staff can also advise on equivalence of qualifications, pre-departure information and international student welfare. They are also able to assist with immigration and visa issues. The International Student Office is also responsible for our airport meet-and-greet service and the international induction programme to help you settle in as quickly as possible and prepare you for the start of your studies.

Religious and spiritual support

We are a vibrant multi-faith, multicultural academic community. People of every kind of spirituality, along with those who do not consider themselves religious or spiritual, are respected.

We have a network of chaplains drawn from a range of spiritual traditions and religious communities. Facilities are available on campus for quiet contemplation, worship and prayer for individuals and groups.

Childcare Provision

Juggling your workload and family commitments can often be a difficult task. Here at Surrey we aim to take some of the pressure off by providing an on-site nursery. Campus Kids is our day nursery for the pre-school-age children of students and staff. It is run in partnership with KidsUnlimited, a national childcare provider with a great reputation. Students with young children should contact Campus Kids directly regarding the availability of places.
