MSc Management

In our world of hyper-competition, the forces of globalisation have spread their far-reaching tentacles all over the globe. Arguably this is most evident in business which, in the current era, is not just international but truly global in its aspects.

In turn, this requires contemporary business managers in a wide range of fields to possess an ever-widening variety of relevant skills to be a prospective candidate for recruitment and, subsequently, an effective manager for their firms. The Surrey Business School's Masters programme in Management is designed with this purpose in mind. It allows you to obtain such a wide portfolio of skills through a balanced mixture of compulsory/core and optional modules that can largely be stylised according to your needs and desires as a student on the programme.

Studying our MSc Management you will find yourself part of a cohort of students who are a truly international ensemble. This will further add to your international experience. As such, both the programme and your fellow participants will make this year highly beneficial to your aim of becoming a valuable manager in today’s competitive business arena.

Entry standards

Applicants should usually hold a Bachelors degree (UK Lower Second/2.2 or above) or equivalent qualification from a recognised British/overseas university. However, every applicant is assessed individually on their own merit. Higher level professional qualifications may also be accepted. Relevant work experience could be an additional benefit where applicants have not reached the standard entry requirements, although it is not an admissions requirement for this particular degree programme.

As a result of their high popularity, we have successfully secured further places for our postgraduate programmes in this area. We are therefore extending our deadline for submission of applications to 31 May 2012. Applications received after this date will only be considered subject to availability of places.

English language requirements

Non-native speakers of English will normally be required to have IELTS 6.5 or above, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component (or equivalent).

Please note that the University of Surrey offers English language programmes and is also an IELTS Test Centre.

Financial Management

This module provides you with the foundations for understanding, analysing and interpreting financial information, and enables you to apply accounting principles and financial theory to decision making across management disciplines and modern business organisations.

Management of Human Resources

Management of Human Resources is intended to provide a firm basic grounding in the ‘people management’ aspects of managerial roles. The module draws on literature and theory from the fields of psychology, sociology, economics and political science.

Marketing

This module provides you with a comprehensive framework for understanding marketing. Theory and case studies are used to analyse environmental conditions, marketplace trends, market characteristics, consumer behaviour, marketing strategy, marketing planning, tactics and operations, and the growing influence of technology.

Operations Management

Operations management relates to the scoping, planning, direction and control of the facilities, processes and people required to transform resources into products and services. The principles of operations management are used in every industry and every environment.

Research Methods

Introducing the process of research project formulation and the key elements of research design, this module should prepare you to design and execute your research study for your dissertation in a systematic and scientific manner.

Strategy

This module is intended to provide you with a holistic understanding of the most relevant theoretical approaches to strategy formulation, implementation and control, in the context of either a single-business or a multi-business organisation.

Optional Modules

E-business

This module identifies contextual influences and industry developments in e-business, as well as mapping various business models and analysing how the electronic platform can transform businesses, exploring current status, recent transformations and predicted developments through the study of both theory and application.

Innovation Management

This module is intended to provide you with the knowledge to understand and the skills to manage innovation at the operational and strategic levels within the context of the firm’s internal and external business environments.

International Human Resource Management

This module provides an understanding of the management of human resources (HR) in an international context, examining the political and economic factors which influence the decision-making processes of multinational organisations, and the way these affect HR strategies and policies.

Project Appraisal

Cost–benefit analysis (CBA) is a multidisciplinary subject linked with both economics and finance. CBA is a valuable tool in decision making and has experienced rapid development since the 1970s, especially in its wide implications on trade and investment, agriculture, environmental and health programmes.

Project Management

This module helps develop a practical understanding and ability to plan and manage a small to medium-sized project to its successful conclusion. It encourages the ability to think across management disciplines and to appreciate the significance or impact of their application on the success of a project.

MSc Management - graduate profile

MSc Management

I chose to come to the University of Surrey because of the rating of the School and the good reputation of the academics. The search for a university to study my Masters was a thorough one; however, Surrey was prompt to respond to my application and the entire process was hassle free.

My initial choice was to study Human Resource Management as I had finished my Chartered Personnel qualification in Nigeria. I subsequently changed my mind to study Management as I wanted a broader course that could be applied to all areas of business.

I am glad I made this decision. I have learnt a lot and enjoyed all the modules and assignments; at times it has been stressful but very worthwhile. I love all the modules and have learnt a lot in such a short time.

I enjoy reading as a hobby and Surrey has enabled me to read a lot more. The Library is equipped with all the books I need. I have also learnt a lot from other students, their cultures and paradigms. Working in teams has sometimes been challenging, but it has helped me to improve my communication and interpersonal skills.

I have been equipped with all the knowledge I need to become a dynamic manager. I hope to obtain a PhD in Strategic Management as I have being inspired by my lectures and would like to gain more experience in the oil sector and take this knowledge back to my country.

Overall, Surrey is a lovely place to live and I have enjoyed every bit of it.

Student Profile: Damla Isik

MSc Management

I decided to study at the University of Surrey on discovering its reputation and high rankings in management studies. Although I had studied a different subject at undergraduate level, the approachable tutors and well-organised lectures soon made me realise it was right for me.

The quality of teaching helped me to gain a better understanding of the subject, while the group-based coursework enabled me to develop my teamwork skills.

Surrounded by great facilities in a peaceful and relaxing environment, Surrey allowed me to meet new people from different nationalities, increasing my knowledge of other cultures and my self-confidence in social groups.

I received tremendous support from the University and guidance from my personal tutor, and the University staff helped in my times of need.

When I finish my studies at Surrey I hope to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry so that I will have the opportunity to combine both my BSc Pharmacy and MSc Management degrees. The education, skills and abilities I have developed during my time here will stay with me for a long time and help me attain my long-term goal in life.

MSc Management - more

Coping with Change – A Constant Challenge for Today’s Managers

The Oxford English Dictionary tells us that management means ‘to organise, to regulate, to be in control’. Our own experience tells us that the challenge of management has never been more intense. Managers now operate in a world that is changing faster and more dynamically than ever before and where that change is rarely predictable.

The watchword for the twenty-first-century manager is flexibility–understanding change, being open to change, being able to change. If you want to be a manager in the twenty-first century, you need more knowledge and better skills than ever before.

This programme will help you to develop that knowledge. You will learn about management and also about organisations and the environments in which they operate. You will learn theories and concepts which allow you to make sense of complex and dynamic conditions in order to identify the issues that really matter.

You will also have the opportunity to develop the essential management skills of teamworking, leadership, decision making, time management and communication. If you want to rise to the challenge of twenty-first-century management, this programme is a great place to start.

Leading-edge Research

The Surrey Business School is a leading centre for research into business. The Centre for Management Learning and Development (CMLD) conducts research which is academically rigorous and relevant to management practice.

Activities in the Centre are concerned with understanding the processes which facilitate the learning, development, growth and transformation of individuals and the organisations of which they are a part.

Our research includes:

  • Action learning – including critical reflection and enquiry, coaching and mentoring
  • Evidence-based practice in management – the role of research as a means of individual and organisational enquiry
  • Meta-cognition – how managers may understand their own thought processes and how these impact upon behaviour in the workplace
  • Transformative learning – including the application of neuro-linguistic programming as a means of personal learning and transformation in social contexts
