About Us

The Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey has an international reputation as a centre of excellence in both research and teaching. In the 2008 RAE we were ranked joint 6th out of all the Sociology departments in the UK. This reflects our excellence in research and publications, and the high quality of our research environment.

We have a vibrant and thriving research culture with strengths in a number of fields, brought together under our five research groupings and underpinned by methodological innovation and rigour. The research groupings are: Age, Generation and Everyday Life; Criminology and Criminal Justice; Culture, Identity and Communication; Developments in Methodology, and Science, Environment and Technologies. The Department also has expertise in ageing and gender, and sleep. We are unique in having two ESRC Research Methods Nodes: QUIC in qualitative software and SIMIAN in social simulation.

The Department offers a full and continually expanding portfolio of high quality degrees at both undergraduate and Masters levels, and a successful programme of postgraduate research training.
