Study
Sociology is a diverse discipline which makes use of a range of theories and concepts. It also employs a range of research methods with observations, interviews, statistics and textual analysis to name but a few.
Our Sociology programme builds on our unique expertise and research strengths to provide you with an intellectually challenging and vocationally relevant education. We aim to provide you with a thorough and enjoyable grounding in the theories and methods of contemporary sociology.

Undergraduate Degrees
We offer undergraduate degree programmes in Sociology; Sociology, Culture and Media Studies; Media Studies; and Criminology and Sociology. Undergraduates are offered the opportunity to undertake a supported one year work placement in the third year of their course and students are strongly encouraged to take this opportunity. Masters Degrees
We offer two MSc degrees - one in Social Research Methods, the other in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Social Research. Both can be taken as full time or part time programmes.
PhD Programme
We have a full PhD programme with around sixty students registered at any one time. Supervision is offered across the range of academic staff research interests. For more information see the Postgraduate Research pages.
Short Course Programme
We also offers a range of specialised day courses on methodological topics and training courses for qualitative software.
Sociology at Surrey is noted for its emphasis on the integration of methodological and substantive issues in both its research and teaching, and for the supportive coexistence of a diversity of approaches within the discipline. While it emphasises applied research and postgraduate research training, it also offers a full range of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
We comprise:
- a teaching staff of 25
- a research staff of 20, working on ESRC, HEA, EU, JISC and Leverhulme funded research projects
- nearly 400 students on our degree programmes
- nearly 40 MSc students on full-time and part-time courses
- over 60 MPhil/PhD students

Postgraduate Degrees
We have a thriving research student population of both full-time and part-time PhD students, and is recognised by the ESRC for doctoral studies, CASE studentships and research training.
Applications from overseas students are encouraged.
The Collaborative Doctoral Programme allows work on a project relating to the student's employment and has a shorter thesis length.
