Our Degree

The hospitality industry is fast growing and it includes activities such as the running of bars, hotels, resorts, restaurants, cruise ships and contract and event catering. This programme is designed for those who wish to pursue an international career in hospitality management.

During your first year you will be given an introduction to the hospitality industry and the types of products and services it offers, including its characteristics, markets and customers. This is covered in greater depth as you progress through the programme, providing you with a thorough understanding of the industry.

You will gain essential hands-on experience in the Lakeside Restaurant, something which is expected of managers in the hospitality industry. You will develop management-level skills in controlling and monitoring food production procedures, food service systems and techniques, and quality and profit performance in food and beverage areas.

We will also provide you with the essential knowledge and understanding of how to manage property in the industry to ensure that restaurants or hotels continue to meet the demands of the market. You will learn about the importance of the manager’s role in the success of a hospitality business from an operations and strategic perspective. We have excellent links with industry and outstanding opportunities on our renowned professional training scheme.

We are the only business school in the world to hold simultaneous accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Programme Overview

The programme consists of compulsory and elective modules which you study to earn credits towards your final degree. You will study for 120 credits per level.

At Level 1 all of the modules are compulsory and languages can be studied as optional elective modules. The compulsory modules will enable you to develop fundamental and international hospitality-specific management skills and knowledge. A compulsory module fundamental to management, such as Introductory Accounting, enables you to understand the place of the accounting function in the commercial life of a business and its relationship with the corporate planning process.

An international hospitality-specific compulsory module, such as Restaurant Operations, provides you with an understanding of the skills, techniques, technology and management involved in restaurant operations and lays the foundations for you to be confident working in a commercial environment.

Level 2 and Level 3 offer you a wide selection of elective modules based on a variety of management topics, including business, entrepreneurship, finance, retail and tourism, together with hospitality.

During Level 3 we also provide the opportunity for you to undertake a final-year project, consisting of detailed research in your particular field of interest.

What our students say

Graduate Profile: Jonathan Kent

BSc International Hospitality Management

I chose Surrey because of its reputation as a leading business and hospitality school. I was instantly drawn to the University when attending an Open Day and felt at ease. The Management School, Lakeside Restaurant and predominantly new facilities reassured me that Surrey invests in the students’ environment.

My course is the only one where, in your first year, you spend one day a week working in the brilliant Lakeside Restaurant. We get to experience front-of-house and kitchen management, working in small teams, which is great fun! I enjoy the ability to mix with students from all walks of life and finding out about the way different cultures work.

Over the four years of my course (including the twelve-month professional training scheme) I have come a long way. During my second year I was part of a team who organised a wrestling evening on campus with international stars, as part of a module on the course to raise money for charity. This greatly improved my organisational skills and also enabled me to delegate on occasion.

People say university is the place where individuals have the opportunity to find out who they really are and what they want to do in life. The skills I have learnt directly and indirectly from my course have without doubt made me a better person, and I now have an increased understanding of the vast opportunities available upon graduation.
