Our Degree
Hospitality and tourism are two of the world’s fastest growing industries. Their activities include the running of cruise ships, timeshare developments, hotels, resorts, holiday parks, bars, tour operations and contract and event catering. Our degree aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need in these environments in order to be a successful manager in both of these exciting industries.
In your first year you will be given an introduction to the hospitality industry and the types of products and services that it offers. This will be covered in greater depth as you progress, providing a thorough understanding of the international hospitality industry and its characteristics, markets and customers. You will be shown the mechanics of hospitality operations – in particular, food and beverage, and accommodation operations.
You will also develop your knowledge of the international tourism industry, enhanced by exploring the management issues created by tourism through the use of real case studies. You will be shown how sustainable tourism is involved with this industry and the techniques and strategies in managing the economic, environmental and sociocultural impacts of tourism in destinations.
Language skills are essential in these industries. You will have the opportunity to study French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Italian or English (if this is not your first language). We have excellent links with industry and outstanding opportunities on our renowned professional training scheme.
We are the only business school in the world to hold simultaneous accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Association of MBAs (AMBA) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Programme Overview
The programme consists of compulsory and elective modules which you study to earn credits towards your final degree. You will study for 120 credits per level.
At Level 1 all modules are compulsory and languages can be studied as optional elective modules. The compulsory modules will enable you to develop fundamental and international hospitality and tourism-specific management skills and knowledge. The hospitality-specific compulsory module, The Hospitality Business, provides you with a strong working knowledge of the international hospitality industry.
You will be able to identify, analyse and evaluate the key issues that need to be addressed within the industry. The tourism-specific compulsory module, Business of Tourism, enables you to identify the principal components involved in the study and understanding of tourism, and it offers you a general introduction to the main tourism industry sectors: accommodation, transport, attractions and the travel trade.
At Level 2 and Level 3 you will study a combination of compulsory modules based on fundamental management topics, and international hospitality and tourism-specific management topics. You will be able to choose from a wide selection of elective modules based on a variety of management topics including business, entrepreneurship, finance and retail, together with hospitality and tourism.

What our students say
Graduate Profile: Linda Sergel
BSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management
I applied to Surrey after recommendations from several of my previous colleagues who had gone to the University. I heard that the quality of teaching was superb; educational, challenging but fun.
The campus is safe to walk around and most things you might need, like a convenience store or book shop, are all on campus. The social part is also very important to me. There’s always something going on and everyone is genuinely friendly. Everything is close and if you need help with anything, all staff here are very quick to help and are always smiling!
My course is fun and, at the same time, challenging. I enjoy (most of) my modules and they are truly interesting. My lecturers are very knowledgeable; you can tell they are very dedicated to their subject, which makes it more fun to study when you know they actually care.
I have learnt a lot at Surrey, especially when it comes to knowledge that can be applied to your work environment. I had four years of previous work experience before I started and I thought I knew it all, but now when I go into a workplace I see things in a different way, and possible changes and improvements are so much clearer and obvious. I am more confident and have a better insight into how a manager should think.
