Bursaries and Scholarships
We Invest in You
The University of Surrey provides over £1m of funding to directly assist our students with the costs associated with studying at university.
Our generous bursaries provide assistance to students from lower income households, and our scholarships reward students with strong academic achievement both prior to admission and during their degree programme. All in all, a great deal.
Surrey support summary
- Scholarships - £1000 per year
- Bursaries - up to £2000 per year (doubled if you also have a scholarship)
- Extended-programme bursaries - £1575 for additional year of enhanced degrees
Our Bursaries
Universities charging fees of £3145 per year must provide £310 per year in non-repayable financial support to students who receive the full maintenance grant of £2835. The University of Surrey is much more generous.
Surrey bursaries
Available to students in receipt of the maintenance grant each year (except during any Foundation or professional training year) where their or their family's residual income is below £35,000. Payments are on a sliding scale, with the full bursary of £2000 being awarded where income is below £10,000 (Please see the chart below).
| Residual income | Surrey Bursary Received |
|---|---|
Over £35,000 | Receive no Surrey bursary |
Between £10,001 and £35,000 | Recieve Surrey bursary, on a sliding scale |
Less than £10,000 | Receive full Surrey bursary |
Enhanced-value bursaries
Where a student is eligible for a Surrey bursary and has also received a Surrey scholarship, they will receive double the amount of bursary - so up to £4000 per year.
Extended-programme bursaries
Awarded to all eligible Home/EU students on extended degree programmes - such as five-year MEng programmes - to cover the period of study which exceeds the standard length of a programme (three years full-time/four years sandwich).
Our Scholarships
The University offers an attractive scholarship scheme to full-time students. Surrey scholarships are worth £1000 per year. They can be awarded in several ways.
Entry scholarships
Entry scholarships will be awarded to full-time Home/EU students who:
- Achieve grades of AAB at A level (or equivalent) on entry, excluding General Studies
- Achieve grades of BBB at A level (or equivalent) on entry, for care leavers and travellers
*Part of our commitment to widen participation
Performance scholarships
Any student (including overseas students) who is not awarded an entry scholarship will be eligible for a performance scholarship if they achieve a standard of First class honours at the end of their first or second year (Level 1 or Level 2). This provides students who may have missed out initially with another chance to earn a scholarship based purely on their achievement in their degree programme.
Scholarships throughout your degree
If students who have been awarded an entry or performance scholarship achieve a 2.1 or above in appropriate assessments, they will continue to receive a yearly scholarship throughout the remainder of their degree programme (except during periods of professional placement and extended periods of study).
